Michael Locksley has stepped down as the head football coach at the University of Maryland, effective immediately, the school announced today.
The university and Locksley reached a mutual decision to part ways following what Maryland officials described as “thoughtful conversations.” Aazaar Abdul-Rahim has been named the interim head coach to lead the Terrapins through the remainder of the season.
Locksley leaves College Park during his eighth season at the helm, finishing his tenure with a 39-54 overall record. His time at Maryland was highlighted by three consecutive bowl game victories from 2021 to 2023, a stretch that helped stabilize a program undergoing significant transition.
Leadership Reflects on the Change
In a statement, Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics Jim Smith expressed gratitude for Locksley’s commitment to the university and the local community.
“We agreed that a coaching change was in the best interest of Coach Locksley and the Maryland football program,” Smith said. “On behalf of the University of Maryland, I want to thank Michael for his dedication to our football program and the genuine care he showed our student-athletes. Michael represented Maryland with pride, strengthened our connection throughout the state and the region, and made a lasting impact on the young men he coached.”
University President Darryll J. Pines echoed those sentiments, praising Locksley’s 18 total years of service to the university across multiple stints as both an assistant and head coach. Pines noted that Locksley “rebuilt Maryland football and brought together the community and fan base during a difficult time period in the history of the university.”
Locksley Bids Farewell
Locksley, a Washington, D.C. native with deep roots in the DMV area, emphasized his enduring connection to the region and the players he coached.
“Maryland football and this community mean a great deal to me,” Locksley said. “I am proud of the work we have done together and remain deeply invested in the success and well-being of the young men in this program… My connection to this region and the people who make this community special is something I will always value.”
The Search for the Next Head Coach
Maryland Athletics announced that a comprehensive national search for the program’s next permanent leader will begin immediately. Athletic department officials stated the search will remain strictly confidential, targeting a proven leader capable of recruiting at an elite level and building a championship-caliber culture.
Smith emphasized that the university administration is fully aligned to provide the necessary investments and resources to ensure the Terrapins can compete at the highest level moving forward.
